BLOG TOUR EXCERPT POST!!!! WISHFUL THINKING by GABBIE S. DURAN

Wishful Thinking Synopsis:
Lexie has one goal in life: to grant one last wish for each of her patients. There isn’t a request she will deny, and has yet to fail to deliver a promise. That is, until the day she goes in search of the infamous rock star Kaleb Knight, who can’t care less about her life’s ambition, or the children she is determined to help.

Kaleb has his own dark secrets. He lives each day as if it’s his last, and refuses to spare a moment of his time to play the part of a knight in shining armor—especially for someone like Lexie . . . or so he thought. Now, his head and heart are at war, and his soul is screaming she is exactly what he needs.

Will Lexie be the only one that can save him in the end? Or will he instead succumb to the darkness threatening to consume him?

EXCERPT!!!

Dinner is done. Dishes are washed and put away, and I give my mother a kiss on the cheek after I tell her of my plans. With a smile, she wishes me luck.
My father and Kaleb are outside happily drinking on the porch. When I join them, I look up to the sky to see a perfectly full moon. The stars are shining brightly in the night sky. It’s the perfect time for what I want to do.
My father and Kaleb have just finished laughing at what was shared amongst them, which allows me to bravely ask Kaleb, “Feel like taking a walk?”
Strangely, Kaleb looks to my father first to say, “With your permission, sir.”
My father gives him a curt nod and he stands to join me at my side. Clasping my hand with his, he tells me, “Where do you feel like going?”
“Just a quick walk,” I tell him, tugging him along at my side. When we are a couple of steps away, I tease Kaleb, “You don’t really need to keep kissing up to my father. I think you’ve already gotten his approval.”
Smiling up to him, I watch as he becomes appalled. “I’m not kissing up to him. It’s called respect,” he states, sounding very serious when he points it out. It’s not what I expected to hear from Kaleb. Nonetheless, “I appreciate it,” I tell him.
We keep walking a little farther in silence until we near my chosen destination. Just how it’s been years since I’ve visited my parents, it’s been just as long since I’ve come to this very spot. When I bring us to a halt, I stare directly at it, my throat already swelling with unshed tears as its branches lightly sway with the wind. It’s grown in the years since I’ve last come up to it, but its bark is still the dark shade I remember.
“Is this the tree?” I hear Kaleb ask as I stare at it.
I cannot form the words quite yet, so instead I nod. The feel of his arms
wrapping around me helps calm my restless nerves.
“It’s the last peaceful memory I have of her,” I confess, looking down at my palm. “Everything after that is nothing but sadness,” I share with him.
He remains silent, allowing my mind to wander and think of that particular night and the memories I made with Dani. “Do you think when it withers and dies it will take our memories with it?” I ask, my tears slowly cascading down my cheeks.
Kaleb turns me to face him, his hand coming to palm my cheek. “The tree doesn’t hold your memories, Pixie.” Placing his hand over my heart, he conveys,
“Her memories are in here. With you. Always.” His words make me cry harder.
Closing the space between us, he holds me tight as I cry into his chest. There, underneath the full moon and bright stars, I let go of my past as I face our tree and take in how true his words are. He’s correct. It’s nothing but a tree. My true memories of Dani will always be with me, in my heart, my soul, and my palm.
