  Songbird ebook
One bridesmaid. One groomsman. One classic wedding hookup. But for Callie and Devin, their weekend of passion is anything but typical. Callie Franklin doesn’t do one night stands. Ever. She’s far too responsible and focused on her career to ever let herself give in to temptation. But, on the eve of her best friend’s wedding, she meets that temptation . . . And his name is Devin McAllister. Devin, on the other hand, has no problem with meaningless hookups. The very last thing he needs—or wants—is a relationship. Relationships come with strings. Relationships come with heartbreak. A late-night encounter in the hotel’s piano bar finds the two unable to resist each other. With her angelic voice and bright blue eyes, Devin’s sure he’s never met anyone as beautiful as his Songbird. Six weeks later, when two pink lines confirm Callie’s worst fears, she and Devin have to face the consequences of their wild weekend. And they have to deal with each other—whether they like it or not. With a love story that’s far from traditional, Callie and Devin begin to wonder if their one-night stand could turn into something neither of them anticipated. A happily ever after.

Traffic’s insane, but I finally make it to Callie’s apartment just after two. I anxiously knock on the door, ridiculously eager to get my hands on her. Maybe she’ll be wearing some flimsy lingerie. Maybe she’ll be naked. My mind’s busy conjuring all the possibilities when she opens the door . . . wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. “Hey,” she says softly, stepping aside to let me in. “Hey. You okay?” She looks pale as a ghost. Is she sick? She looks sick. Maybe I should call an ambulance. Or my dad. “I’m okay.” Callie leads me over to the sofa. “Look, Devin, I know you probably have some plans for us for tonight, but that won’t be happening.” “Oh.” Disappointment floods me, but if the nauseated look on her face is any indication, it’s probably best. Besides, there’s the next night. And the next. “But we need to talk, so I’m glad you’re here. I have something I need to tell you.” She abruptly jumps to her feet and walks toward her kitchen. “Would you like something to drink?” I can’t tell if she’s being a good hostess or simply stalling, but I ask for a beer. It looks like I’m gonna need it. I hadn’t pegged her for the kind of woman who needs to talk about her feelings. When she returns to the living room, Callie hands me a bottle and sits down next to me. I notice she only brought one. “You’re not drinking?” She curls her feet beneath her. “Unfortunately, no. I won’t be drinking for a long time.” I’ve had it with the riddles. “All right, what’s going on? My brother and his girlfriend threatened to murder me if I make you cry. Something’s obviously up with you because you just want to talk.” Her forehead creases. “Don’t you ever just talk to a woman?” “Not if I can help it.” “Why not? The girls you usually date don’t have enough sense to carry on an intelligent conversation?” “I don’t date, Callie.” “I see. You just sleep with them.” “Sometimes. Is there something wrong with that?” “And are you careful?” “Careful?” “Safe,” she says softly. “We didn’t use protection. I just wondered if that’s typical for you.” Oh. It’d be easy to blame the alcohol, but honestly, using protection was the very last thing on my mind that night. “No, that’s not typical. I’m sorry about that.” “So am I.” Callie seems far more relaxed after my apology. Maybe this night won’t be an epic failure after all. I slide closer to her, but she raises her hand in warning. “We’re not finished.” I groan and lean back against the couch. “Devin, I need you to listen. Something happened that weekend. I’m almost positive you won’t want to sleep with me after you hear what I’m about to say.” “I seriously doubt that.” “I don’t.” Callie sits up a little straighter and squares her shoulders. “I want you to know I expect nothing from you. Our weekend together was a mistake, and I’ll deal with the consequences of it. I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do at this point, but I thought you should at least know what’s going on.” “What’s going on?” Her eyes flood with tears. “Devin, I’m pregnant.” Pregnant. Pregnant? I stare at her. She stares at me. I watch her closely, hoping that at any moment she’s going to burst out laughing. But she’s not laughing. She’s crying. I hear Lorie’s voice in my suddenly throbbing head. Don’t make her cry. “Why . . . why are you telling me?” She wipes her eyes. “What do you mean?” “You’re assuming it’s mine?” “Of course it’s yours!” I snort. “Really? How can you be so sure? Maybe it was that bartender in the hotel’s piano bar. Or maybe it was the guy who sat with you at the reception. Or maybe—just maybe—it was the photographer you were with tonight. You two seem pretty close.” Even as the bitter words drip off my tongue, I know better. Her face is just too furious . . . her eyes too heartbroken. Suddenly, Callie stops crying. Her eyes flash with fury just seconds before she slaps me across the face. Despite the ringing in my ears, I can hear my brother’s warning. Don’t be an asshole tonight. Too late.

Sitting down on the piano bench, I let my fingers drift aimlessly along the keys. I switch on the microphone and start to play the opening bars of my favorite Fleetwood Mac song.   Closing my eyes, I play and sing, allowing the music to soothe my troubled mind. I’m at the final chorus when I feel someone’s eyes on me. It’s the most incredible sensation—instinct alerting me to the penetrating stare of some stranger in the dimly lit bar.   I slowly open my eyes, and my fingers slip off the keys when I see him.   He’s seated at a table just a few feet away. His tie is undone, as are the first couple buttons of his shirt. He gazes at me, and I watch as his finger lazily trails along the rim of his glass while I struggle to remember the words to a song I’ve loved all my life.   The man rises from the seat, his eyes never leaving mine as he picks up his glass and walks over to the piano. I break the spell, forcing myself to look down and focus on the keys. Without asking permission, he sits down on the bench next to me. I take a deep breath and pray for instinct to take over as I finish the song.   After I play the last note, silence hangs in the air between us until he lifts his hand and brushes my hair away from my shoulders.   “Play something else,” he says, his voice deep and smooth against my ear.   So I sing, paying no real attention to the words as we stare at each other throughout the song. I have no idea how long we sit there, but it’s apparently too long for the bartender because he announces last call.   The handsome stranger stands up and reaches for me.   “Come with me, Songbird.”   The look in his eye is unmistakable, filling me with a sense of longing and excitement that I haven’t felt in so very long. I know I’m too tired, too lonely, and probably a little too tipsy to accept this man's outstretched hand.   I do it anyway.

ROCKING AROUND THE HOLIDAYS WITH ROCKSTARLIT.COM AUTHORS & MAJOR GIVEAWAY!!! ~ DAY 16 with SYDNEY LOGAN

Rocking Around the Holidays with RockStarLit.com Authors

Hi everyone – welcome to our very first Rocking Around the Holidays. From now until December 23rd, we’re giving you the inside scoop and behind the scenes info on Rock Star Authors.
AND…
To celebrate the holiday season there’s a HUGE contest to go along with it – which includes 2 iPad Minis, signed books by all of the authors, gift cards galore and much, much more!

Behind the Scenes with Sydney Logan

My Writing Space (AKA the Dungeon)
That’s what we call it at my house. The Dungeon. When we built the house, we actually called this room the office, so I guess it is being used for what it was intended to be. I just never dreamed I’d actually be writing books in this room! The picture I’ve included is of my desk and of my cat, Gus. Most days, Gus is content to lie at my feet (or disappear upstairs for hours) while I write. But some days, he wants love. Or food. That’s when he becomes an obstacle between me and the PC.

In almost every interview, I’m asked if I write with music. It’s a fair question, considering I’m a complete musicholic. But when it’s time to write, my writing space is typically quiet except for the hum of the ceiling fan. Music can really influence my writing, so I’m careful. I can sometimes write with instrumental music playing in the background, but it’s rare. My happy-go-lucky scene can become somber if the wrong kind of music is playing, so to be safe, my writing space is usually music-free.

I can’t wait to see the rest of the authors’ writing spaces! Happy holidays!

My wedding day! We were married on December 7. Our church was decorated for Christmas and my bouquets were made of cream and crimson poinsettias.

Favorite Holiday memory as a child

Waking up to find Santa (aka my mom and dad) putting gifts under our tree. The fantasy was shattered! :)

Do you dress your pets up for the holidays?

Are you kidding? My cat would claw my eyes out if I tried to do that! :)

RE-RELEASE with EXCERPT ~ SOLDIER ON by SYDNEY LOGAN

Title: Soldier On
Author: Sydney Logan
Date of Publication: June 2014

soldier on

Will his call of duty break both their hearts? Losing her father in Desert Storm has left Stephanie James with a bitter soul when it comes to the military. As a college senior juggling a full course load, Steph's only goal is to graduate with honors at the end of the semester. She’s focused, determined, and a firm believer in all work and no play. Then she meets Brandon Walker at a New Year’s Eve costume party. Despite his disguise, Steph finds herself attracted to the camouflaged soldier who curls her toes with a scorching midnight kiss. Brandon is an engineering major and ROTC student from the hills of Kentucky. Growing up as the son of a major general has given Brandon firsthand knowledge of the struggles military families sometimes face. Now that his father’s memory is fading, Brandon is even more determined to make his dad proud and graduate as an officer in the United States Army. Then he meets Stephanie, and suddenly, his focus is less on his military service and more on the pretty brunette who has stolen his heart. When he becomes aware of Steph’s resentment toward the military, he worries their relationship is doomed. Steph unexpectedly finds herself in need of a roommate. Brandon volunteers, thinking it’s the perfect opportunity to show her the real Brandon, before he’s forced to admit the truth about his four-year obligation to the army. Afraid that living together will be a distraction to graduating on time, Steph establishes house rules—rules they both find difficult to obey. When faced with the realization that she's fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present . . . and in her future?

Frat houses have libraries? This one does, complete with ceiling-high bookshelves. Laptops line one wall, and a giant multimedia screen is attached to another. While all of it is impressive, nothing excites my book-loving heart more than to see the library ladder. Secretly, I’ve always wanted to climb one—the tall ladders that roll from one end of the shelves to the other. Ironically enough, library ladders always remind me of Beauty and the Beast. Or the love scene in Atonement. One of those movies is G-rated. The other most definitely is not. Suddenly nervous, I look over my shoulder before making my decision. YOLO. Carpe Diem. Whatever. Slipping off my shoes, I reach for the ladder and slowly begin to climb. Sadly, this is the most adventurous thing I’ve done in a long time, and I can’t stop smiling. I’ve made it to the fifth rung when I hear someone clear his throat. I hold on tightly and manage to turn myself around without falling off. When I’m sure I’m steady, I turn and find myself looking into the eyes of a soldier. Possibly Army. Maybe Marine. Not that it matters. I accepted long ago that my hatred for anything military related is a little unhealthy, but when the service strips a girl of the privilege of knowing her father, it sometimes makes a person bitter. I am the epitome of bitter. This particular soldier is smiling at me, and I can’t lie, the smile is kind of beautiful. Despite that, my first instinct is to roll my eyes at his outfit. But then, I remember this is a costume party, and he probably just needed a quick and totally uncreative disguise. “I don’t think this room is open to visitors,” he says, his tone soft and deep. I wonder if that’s his natural speaking voice or if he’s just playing his role as a badass. The guy certainly looks like a soldier, dressed in his head-to-toe camouflage and smeared-on face paint. “It was actually the only room that wasn’t locked, which is kind of stupid if you ask me. This is the one room in the house you guys shouldn’t want trashed. Drunken idiots could really do some damage in here.” He grins, and my breath catches in my throat as he steps closer. I tighten my hold on the ladder, because a smile that makes a girl’s heart race isn’t the best thing when she’s trying to maintain her balance. “I noticed you downstairs.” Embarrassed, I glance down at my ridiculous dress. “I’m a little hard to miss in canary yellow. I’m going to kill Tessa—” “That’s not why I noticed you.” Before I can ask why he noticed me, shouts erupt from downstairs. “Ten, nine, eight . . .” “Do you have someone to kiss at midnight?” he asks. I simply shake my head. He steps closer, pinning me between his body and the bookshelf. “You do now.”

Q/A with Sydney
Where do you find your inspiration? People and music, mostly. Sometimes, like in the case with my novel Soldier On, I found a picture that served as inspiration and later, as the cover of the book.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? The most challenging thing is balancing writing and promotion. I’m not very good at it. It was easier when I only had one book, but the more I write, the harder it gets to juggle it all. I’m not complaining, because I love it, but that’s the biggest challenge for me.
What are your current projects? I’m getting ready to release a holiday collection of short stories titled Once Upon a December. It will include two previously published Kindle short stories along with a new short story. It will release on November 28. I’m also working on my fourth novel.
Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and your most recent published work? Lessons Learned is actually my debut novel, but it was published two years ago with a small indie publisher. I’m now self-publishing it with a new cover. However, my most recently published novel is Soldier On. I think readers would find that my writing style is a little more laid-back now. I don’t agonize over every single word like I did with my first book. I’m much more comfortable and confident in my storytelling.
